Episode #025 - The Clock King
Original Airdate - September 21st, 1992
Strange things begin happening in Gotham, all having to do with time.
Synchronized traffic lights go awry, subway trains collide, etc. These
disasters are a result of Temple Fugate, The Clock King, who is
attempting to discredit Mayor Hill. He finally kidnaps Hill and ties him
to the minute hand of the Gotham Clock Tower. Unless Batman can rescue
him, when the clock strikes 3:15, Hill will be crushed.

FUGATE: Fugate. Temple Fugate. I should think you remember the name by
now, councillor. We've only been taking the same train every day for one
year, seven months and thirteen days.
HILL: Oh right! The efficiency expert.

FUGATE: I needed those five minutes ago.
OFFICE BOY: I'm sorry sir, but. . .
FUGATE: Thirty-seven pages. That would take a copier exactly one minute
and forty-nine seconds. One more delay like this, and you're fired!

JUDGE: Due to his failure to appear, this court finds your client in
default. Judgement stands at twenty-million dollars.
FUGATE: No! You can't! I'll be ruined!
JUDGE: Then perhaps this will teach you to be on time for a change!
FUGATE: Aaaahhhhhh!

SUBTITLES: SEVEN YEARS LATER
SUBTITLES: 8:57 am

BATMAN: I want some answers, wiseguy. Talk!
FUGATE: A pity. I don't know what to tell you, Batman, except perhaps
that the 9:15 is always six minutes early.

BATMAN: Wait here.
ALFRED: My pleasure. This is one of the finest back alleys in all of
Gotham.
ALFRED STARES DOWN AT A RAT ON THE CAR'S HOOD.

FUGATE (on tape): Sorry I couldn't have been with you in person, Batman,
but I have a train to catch. This box contains a high-speed vacuum pump.
I know you've got all kinds of gas masks, so I'm putting you out of my
misery by simply removing all the oxygen in the room. The process will
take fifteen minutes which is exactly seventeen minutes less than the
time it would take you to burn through the door with that oxyacetylene
torch of yours. Oh, and I don't recommend trying to open the pump's
housing. It's rigged with a vibration sensitive explosive. Of course if
you want to get blown to bits, that's fine by me. By the way, it's time
to say adieu, Batman!

FUGATE: 3:15, Hill. Does that time hold any meaning for you?
HILL: I don't know what you're talking about!
FUGATE: You told me to take my coffee break at 3:15.
HILL: What?!
FUGATE: You don't remember?! My court date!!
HILL: Oh my lord! The law suit! Fugate! I swear I was only trying to
help!
FUGATE: Don't hand me that! You did it on purpose! The plaintiffs were
represented by your law firm, Mr. Mayor!
HILL: But I had nothing to do with that case, Fugate!
FUGATE: Liar! Not that it matters anymore now that you have an
appointment to keep at 3:15 precisely with the Grim Reaper!

BATMAN: Give it up, Fugate. Hill committed no crime against you.
FUGATE: He did worse! He made me late!
Review: Another underrated
episode that most people do not appreciate. This episode introduces a
truly obsessed villain, the Clock King. He has the most demented kind of
motivation behind him which makes the episode so much more enjoyable.
Even his name Temple Fugate was perfect for the character, ("tempus
fugit" meaning "time flies").
Batman also gets to use both his detective skills and his
resourcefulness in this episode as he tracks the Clock King down, and
eventually has to escape a vault whose air is running low and which has
a bomb within it. It is quite a good scene.
More episodes should have been done like this, with more of a background
on the villain's madness. The Clock King was perfect, but he would not
work as a frequently returning villain.
