Episode #066 - Sideshow
Original Airdate - May 3rd, 1994
En route to an upstate prison, Killer Croc escapes and leads Batman on a
dangerous chase through the wilderness. After throwing Batman
temporarily off his trail, the reptile-man takes refuge with a group of
retired circus freaks, and convinces them to help him. When Batman
arrives, Croc and the freaks band together to capture him.

RICHARD: So tell us, friend. From whence do you hail?
CROC: Uh, see, I was part of this freak show, same as you, only they
kept me chained like an animal, day and night, forced me to live in a
tank, made me do tricks!
MAY: How awful!
JUNE: Jerks!
CROC: Yeah! Uh, they fed me fish heads and stale bread. When I tried to
get away, they worked me over pretty good! Put me in chains!

BATMAN IS SCALING A ROCK LEDGE WHEN A STONE COMES LOOSE AND HE FALLS. AT
THE LAST MOMENT, HE GRABS ONTO A ROOT AND PULLS HIMSELF BACK UP.
BATMAN: And they say the city's dangerous!

CROC: Stay out of this! This is between me and the Bat!
JUNE: But you can't kill him!
MAY: He's still a human being!
CROC: Who are you callin' human?
BILLY: Oh, Croc!
RICHARD: Alas, I fear that the chameleon has shown his true colors!

BILLY: Why, Croc? Why'd ya turn on us like that? We coulda helped you.
We coulda done something.
CROC: You said you could be yourself out here, remember? I guess that's
what I was doin', being myself.
Review: This is another
underestimated episode of Batman which most people hate or don't even
think about. It really looks into the evil side of Killer Croc, rather
than the 'let's make fun of him 'cause he's stupid' side that Paul Dini
brought out. It was very psychological how Croc was intending to be mean
towards the freaks, but he wasn't completely as long as Batman wasn't
present. It was interesting to see the way he behaved, especially around
Billy to whom he seemed to like.
The animation was great too, with a nice, smooth job done, especially
with Batman's cape moving when he moved quickly, Batman's pole vault,
and Croc actually looked scary at times. The other characters were very
well done too. It was strange to see Batman in the forest as well, but
there was some nice animations there too, such as Croc then Batman
jumping into a puddle which was a small touch, but nice.
The beginning of the episode was strange with no real dialogue, but it
was very effective. Also interesting, is that this is probably the
closes Batman has ever come to death. If Croc hadn't been tranquilized,
Batman's head would have been smashed in with a rock. Ironically, it is
the stupid Croc's favorite weapon, but it was kinda creepy that he
almost bought the farm.
