Original Release Date: August 31, 1999  Don't get me wrong, this is good music to listen to when one is writing or working, but there is nothing that really pops out and sticks out. These tracks make you remember the series more than stand on their own. Batman: The Animated Series has that easily hummable theme, and music that sticks out, particularly The Joker's catchy theme. There are a couple weak spots to the soundtrack. At times, it sounds like these brave groups of composers, obviously trying something new, are shoving way too much down our throats. Tracks like "Batman Defeats Chappell" could probably spark a diabetic attack if repeatedly listened to. The CD, while a nice overall package, can jump around a bit, too, with no overall theme present. This CD will definitely be an acquired taste - not everyone will be able to stomach this. This is a complete departure from the usual orchestral sounds from the animated DC tunes, and this can be quite a shock to the system. This transition could have been made a bit easier if the music during the first episode's opening teaser, where we find out what happened to Bruce Wayne, was included. The tracks tend to run together, which is actually a benefit for the CD. The CD sounds pretty good overall, bookmarked by the opening and closing theme. We get some loud, thumping techno music, and even some quiet beat work. It's a pleasant mix that comes together quite nicely. The music may take some getting used to, but if you're a fan of the show then you'll like this soundtrack release. If you're used to the classic orchestral sounds of Batman and Superman: The Animated Series, then go run and hide. |
