Review
How do you nullify an entire episode? With a decent few
minute long teaser, of course. Starting off with Batman
chasing a raincoat-clad person, Wildcat is immediately
brought in despite his finding the alleged criminal to
be not very significant. The elderly hero is quickly, or
rather slowly, proved wrong as Bane finally buffs up
into his normal appearance. In a short but well done
fight, the teaser makes use of Wildcat far better than
his full episode - "Enter the Outsiders!" - even came
close to.
The rest of the episode is a bit of a
rocky premise, as not only has a Booster Gold “woe is
me” episode been done by DCAU’s “Justice League
Unlimited,” but the “woe is me” hero is a far too common
plot used by Brave and the Bold. I have to say, despite
these two strikes against it, it’s quite close to a home
run. Booster and Skeets make for some real fun,
especially as Booster’s origin recalling is frequently
contradicted by cuts to what actually happened. What
really helps this time around is that we’re not simply
introduced to Booster in the middle of a fight, instead
we’re brought into the middle of a pitch for a Booster
Gold toy line to cynical CEOs. Interestingly, he’s
turned down due to not being an “A-list” hero - a term
often applied by real life toy company Mattel.
To
remedy this, Booster seeks out Batman for a “Brave and
the Gold” team-up leaving him to bug Batman in the
rarely-seen Batcave. Which, according to him, is not
only a public attraction in the 25th century, but even
has a rollercoaster inside of it. Future people get all
the fun. To Booster’s luck, they team up to thwart the
bizarre plot of the primitive yet immortal villain
Kru’ll (how cruel is that pun?) voiced by the famous DC
voice veteran Michael Dorn. During their first
encounter, Kru’ll manages to capture the heroes and
prepares to kill them in a device most likely inspired
by the Hadron Collider controversy.
They even
manage to make even Skeets useful for more than just
dialogue fun, the little bot manages to free Booster,
but unfortunately is bot-napped shortly afterwards by
the burly villain for his power source. Which is then
used in a very Grodd-like device, but instead of turning
people into gorillas, it turns people in to… cavepeople.
The point of that was lost on me, but even though the
main villain’s intent wasn’t all that interesting, the
episode is quite entertaining. The teaser is better than
the main storyline, but overall it’s still an episode to
see at least once.
