Review
When this episode first started, I was a bit concerned
due to the presence of Aquaman. I’ve been loving this
incarnation of Aquaman plenty, don’t get me wrong, but
he’s really had plenty of spotlight this season.
Fortunately, I was wrong - for the most part. It
featured Aquaman quite a bit, but the real focus was on
continuing the serial arc of the invasion of the
creature Starro. This was a fantastic and unexpected way
to continue it, as I thought it would be solely focused
on the previous heroes we were introduced to for the
first Starro teaser. Easily one of the best teasers of
the show, or I may simply be a sucker for things
involving starfish taking over the mind of a Dolphin.
The rest of the episode gives us the first
introduction of the sextuple team The Metal Men, and
their creator Dr. Magnus. The beginning of the episode
is easily the weakest part of it, as it features Chemo
yet again wreaking Godzilla-like havoc. While Chemo is
moderately interesting, it’s just a bit odd that Batman
is fighting him alone after coming so close to death in
“Journey to the Center of the Bat” after being infected
by Chemo’s toxic innards. I suppose it could be
explained that he now has an antidote for it, but the
entire scene just comes across as too convenient of an
intro for The Metal Men. Despite this, however, the
episode nicely picks up when we finally leave Chemo
behind.
They’re not the sole long forgotten
introduction to this episode, though. Emerging as their
newfound foes, colleagues of Dr. Magnus’ that had been
thought dead come back as the body lacking creatures
known as The Gas Gang. Both of these introductions are
wonderfully done, and the episode - after getting away
from Chemo - never ceases to amuse with the face off
between The Metal Men and their gaseous foes. The
spontaneous decision to combine The Metal Men with
Batman was odd and a bit too convenient, but wasn’t bad
in the end. Overall, if you’re a pre-existing fan of
these guys, or have never heard of them before - like me
- then I highly recommend this episode!
