Teen Titans: The Judas Contract Limited Edition Blu-Ray Gift Set Review
by James Harvey

The home video release of Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, available through Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, gives us a look at the comic book roots of the Teen Titans, something that long-time fans of the characters should enjoy, Still, while the studio offers a nice physical Blu-ray package, it's somewhat lacking in actual bonus content.

In terms of audio and video, the studio delivers a solid presentation, as per usual. The film looks crisp, clean and sharp, with just a bit of banding noticeable, and even then it was it was incredibly slight. There was no major macroblocking noticeable, either. The audio track is just fantastic, sounding boisterous and appropriately heav, adding a nice bit of extra heft to Terra's world-shaking abilities. Audio is crystal clear and it never waivers, with the mystical battles sounding absolutely robust and the quieter, dialogue-heavy moments coming through perfectly. Warner Bros. rarely disappoints when it comes to cobbling together a very satisfying A/V presentation for their animated DC Comics titles, and this title is no exception.

For bonus content, “Titanic Minds: Reuniting Wolfman and Perez” is a nearly thirty-minute featurette where the two reminisce about their early comic days. It offers an interesting look at how comics come together, how storylines are developed, and is just an enjoyable look at two comic industry icons reconnecting and taking a fond look back at their work. Of course, their work on The New Teen Titans and for DC Comics takes the focus. It's a really enjoyable, even engaging look at the world of comics, and of comic creators, that we rarely see. "Villains United: Deathstroke" is a ten-minute featurette about Deathstoke. Wolfman and Perez discuss the origins of the character and how he became tied to the overall Teen Titans storyline. The featurette seems more geared toward casual viewers, but knowledgeable fans should still find this an enjoyable summation of the character's roots.

This disc also includes a nearly 10-minute look at the upcoming Batman and Harley Quinn animated film, along with two other 'first look' featurettes for two previously available DC Universe Animated Original Movie titles. Bonus episodes for this release include the Teen Titans episodes "Terra" and "Titan Rising," two solid episodes of the classic series which kick off Terra's arc in the beloved animated series. Sadly, the episodes are presented in standard definition 4:3 format. The disc is wrapped up with a selection of trailers, including trailers for the Wonder Woman: Commemorative Edition home media release, the live-action Wonder Woman theatrical film, Injustice 2 and a smattering of other related titles. As always, this release included a DVD and digital copy of the Teen Titans: The Judas Contract feature.

As with select previous DC Universe Animated Original Universe Blu-ray releases, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has added a little extra incentive for fans to pick up the physical edition of Teen Titans: The Judas Contract in the shape of a Blue Beetle mini-figure. The Blue Beetle mini-fig looks really great, and is easily one of the best of the many Warner Bros. has included in these releases to date. With the growing dominance of digital media, it’s encouraging to see the studio reward those who purchase the Blu-ray by including a small exclusive extra.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has put together another enjoyable Blu-ray Deluxe Edition release that's worth checking out, even if the bonus content isn't as exhaustive as it could be. And even though the majority of the bonus content here is also available on the Digital HD release, the physical media version is still the best edition to own in terms of audio/video quality and complete bonus content. The lack of a commentary is disappointing, and a look at the actual animated film would've been awesome (why not something where the creative team discuss their process in adapting the comic to film, why they cut certain things, etc.), but what's on there is solid and worth watching. The audio and video remain as top-notch as always, with very, very little blemishes. And again, the little figurine is excellent incentive by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to get fans to pick up the Blu-ray release. If you're looking to own Teen Titans: The Judas Contract - and you should, as I find it to be quite rewatchable, then the Limited Edition Gift Set Blu-ray is the Recommended way to go.
