Rich Fogel Talks Justice League's "Paradise Lost"
By Jim Harvey
01-10-2002

Toon Zone recently had a chance to catch up with Rich Fogel, who works on Cartoon Network's popular Justice League series.

"After doing huge sci-fi epics like "Secret Origins" and "In Blackest Night", I wanted to do a show that revolved around magic for a change of pace." said Fogel. "Felix Faust seemed like a natural villain for a magic-based story. But when I went back and re-read the original Faust stories, they were pretty goofy. Still, there was something there that intrigued me, so we started tweaking. Writer Joe Kuhr, who is a fount of comic book trivia, brought in some great ideas that really helped solidify the story. Faust is a sorcerer who is in pursuit of ultimate knowledge and will stop at nothing to get it. Bruce did a re-design which made Faust imposing and creepy. We cast Robert Englund to do the voice (Freddy from the "Nightmare on Elm Street" films), and we all know how scary he can be!"

The episode will spotlight Wonder Woman and the island of Themyscria.

"The story turned out great, and, as director Dan Riba points out, it plays like a Ray Harryhausen epic with lots of monsters and lots of magic. This story also puts Wonder Woman squarely in the spotlight. When her home on Themiscyra is threatened, she is forced to make some hard choices. Susan Sullivan is wonderful as Hippolyta, Wonder Woman's mother. When Part Two came back from overseas, we were blown away by what our friends at KoKo had done. It's amazing! This show should be a treat for anyone who enjoys adventure, myth and magic. "
