Rich Fogel Talks Justice League Season Two!
By Jim Harvey
03-11-2002

Toon Zone is proud to present the first of two very exciting Q & A's with Justice League producer/series writer Rich Fogel and series producer Bruce Timm. Today, Toon Zone will be presenting Rich Fogel's thoughts on the series as continues at it's breakneck speed onto the end of this season, and the beginning of season two, slated for late fall 2002.

With the second season confirmed, will you approach it in the same fashion as this one? Why(ie: two and three part episodes, no singles)?

We're thrilled to be picked up for another season of Justice League. It's a daunting challenge to try to top what we did last year, but we're excited and we're already planning some big stories that I think will surprise and delight our fans. Last season, we learned a lot about how to handle such a sprawling cast of characters. Hopefully we'll continue to build on that and do more stories that focus on individual Leaguers. Although I know that some fans are frustrated by the two-parters, we'll probably continue doing them. These stories are just too big and complex to be contained within a single half hour. However, we're going to try to avoid the three parters because they just kill our production schedule.

Any stories you'd like to tackle in the second season? You dropped hints about revisiting LEGACY - any chance?

We definitely want to bring Darkseid into the series. We avoided him in the first season, because we wanted to cover fresh ground with our new team. However, now that they're established, I think they'll be ready to take on the hoards of Apokolips!

Do you plan to start weaving a tighter continuity with the other series in the second season?

We're always mindful of continuity, but we won't be slaves to it. Justice League is a totally different series from Batman or Superman, and we can't assume that all of our audience will be familiar with everything that happened in those other shows. Still, there are threads that bind these shows together. When Luthor appears in Injustice For All, he's clearly stepped right out of Superman: the Animated Series. (However, don't hold your breath waiting for Kyle Rayner to show up!)

Anything you'd like to change and/or fix going into a new season?

As I said before, we learned a lot during the course of the first season. I'd like to single out our composers for particular praise. They were faced with the overwhelming (and unfair) task of creating epic scores at a fraction of the cost of our earlier series. They have certainly risen to the occasion, and as the season has gone on, each score has gotten fuller, richer and more dramatic. Wait 'til you hear the score for Fury. It's amazing! Hopefully, we'll all continue to learn and improve in all areas.

And finally - what story ideas do you have for the second season, are you already planning out (ie: what villians do you want to bring in, guest stars, etc...)?

Stan Berkowitz is already working on an Amazo story. We hope to bring back Aquaman, and we might catch a glimpse of Brainiac or Dr. Destiny. But these are just hints of the things to come. I don't want to spoil the fun. So stay tuned! The action is just beginning!
