Bruce Timm Talks Justice League's "War World"
By Jim Harvey
02-23-2002

Cartoon Network will premiere the new Justice League episode this Sunday, entitled "War World Part 1". The episode will air tomorrow night at 7pm. It will rerun Saturday at 12:30pm, then in widescreen later that night at 10pm. Toon Zone was able to catch up with Bruce Timm and talk about the much anticipated episode featuring Mongul and Dragga.

"Not too much I can tell you about WAR WORLD, without spoiling the fun. As you might guess from the commercials, there's a fair amount of intense hand-to-hand combat scenes...pretty brutal at times...kinda like a weird cross between "Gladiator" and "WWF Smackdown" in an interstellar setting!" said Bruce Timm.

"What really makes the show as far as I'm concerned is the vocal performances. Our two "lead guest stars" were both just AWESOME. Eric Roberts brought Mongul to life in a way that none of us expected. It's a VERY off-beat performance, flamboyant but menacing - Definitely not a "Poor Man's Darkseid"! And William Smith is just freakin' WONDERFUL as Draaga. I've been a fan of his work for years, it was great fun having him in the show." said Timm" You won't beleive the sound of his voice, it sounds like chunks of granite being scraped together...and that's his actual speaking voice, he's not putting it on! I even had to go back and make the character design more savage after the recording. The visual didn't do his voice justice!. It's not just the quality of his voice, his delivery was
spot-on as well...scary but soulful."

"There's great stuff from our series regulars, too, of course. George Newbern gets to show a LITTLE bit of Superman's darker side. I mean, he's still pretty...polite, shall we say, and in the course of his two big battle sequences, he DOES take some punishment, but you can be sure he comes back swingin'!"

"In addition to her regular role as Hawkgirl, Maria Canals does a HILARIOUS unbilled second voice as...well, you'll see..." Timm concluded.
