Bruce Timm Talks 'The Savage Time'
By Jim Harvey
07-31-2002

On September 7th at 7pm (ET), Cartoon Network will air one of the most anticipated Justice League episodes yet - The Savage Time. The three part episode will air as a movie under the Cartoon Theatre banner. Toon Zone was able to catch up to Bruce Timm about the upcoming Justice League event.

"The Savage Time is a huge time-travel adventure epic, with some of the most ambitious set-pieces we've ever attempted" said Bruce Timm "We just finished the sound mix on part three yesterday, and it sounds AWESOME (God, I hope the home video people release it on DVD someday). Each of our regular composers did one episode each, and they all outdid themselves. Our Sound Design genius Robert Hargreaves did an amazing job with the sound FX In fact, EVERYBODY who worked on this story went above and beyond the call of duty! Director Butch Lukic is a huge WW2 buff, so he made sure the historical details were spot-on, and is such a big Sgt. Rock fan, he story-boarded all the "Rock" sequences himself!"

"Director Dan Riba is a golden age comic fan, so he poured his heart and soul into the blackhawk sequences." Bruce Timm continued "There must even be some WW2 buffs at Koko, because they went to town on the WW2 battle scenes! There's a dogfight in part 2 that HAD to have been animated by an aviation buff!"

"Story-wise, I don't want to give too much away, but there are are three major character arcs running through this story, focused primarily on Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, J'onn (Martian Manhunter) and Wonder Woman. Batman and Superman are prominently featured as well, but, if anything, it's Diana's story more than anything else."

"As you know, the story WAS originally intended to be our whopper season finale, but it works just as well as a "season one-and-a-half" re-launch premiere episode." Bruce Timm concludes. "Fortunately, there are no continuity-busters in this one as in Injustice For All, so the re-shuffle does no violence to the overall scheme of things."
