Review

Duck Dodgers and the Green Lantern Corp wouldn’t be something you’d think you’d see together in the same show. You’d also never think they’d work together—but through sheer “looneyness”, not only does this episode of Duck Dodgers work, but it also delivers plenty of laughs, puns and action along the way. Curious as to how it all starts and ends? Of course you are.

The Green Loontern begins with the two well-known characters of the show—Duck Dodgers and The Eager Young Space Cadet—shopping around and, as usual, Dodgers making the Cadet do jobs he didn’t volunteer for. Stopping off at the dry cleaners to get his uniform, a mix up involves Dodgers getting a hold of a Green Lantern outfit and ring (these belonging to Hal Jordan). Trying the outfit on, Dodgers becomes a Green Lantern, and goes off to fight justice, ogle at “babeage”, and, of course, save falling puppies. After doing just that, his ring pulls him into a region where Kilowog and dozens of other Green Lantern’s are fighting Sinestro’s bots.

One of the coolest things about the episode was the appearance of Hal Jordan—you can add all the Green Lanterns, glowing rings, villains and jokes you want, but, hands down, it was Jordan that made me enjoy the episode so much. Yeah, he was only in it for two minutes, but come on—they got Kevin Smith to voice him...just doesn’t get much better than that.

Perhaps one of the best things about the series that I’ve loved so much so far is not only the excellent music that accompanies each episode, but also the voice actors that come with it—some may say that this episode has ruined the original version of Duck Dodgers, but I think it’s only enhanced it—it’s updated it, added new jokes and is just an overall fun series to watch. As with some of the older cartoons, there are elements that would go over the TV-G rating if they were dwelled on—but, much like cartoons from the “older” days, the jokes are so subtle that younger viewers won’t pick it up.

Maybe I’m still riding high on the “rush” I got from this episode—seeing all the Green Lantern’s in action, the jokes, the music, the voice acting—but, I got to say, this is one of my top favorite Duck Dodgers episodes. And while I’m not that big of a fan of crossovers, when done right, or just downright funny, they are enjoyable. And this one was just that.

Special thanks to Brian Cruz for letting us use his Duck Dodgers background!
