Review:
After a long hiatus, “Young Justice” finally returns with an episode that should have aired back in October. “Cornered” brings Despero to Earth, who is just looking to beat people up for bragging rights while Secretary General Tseng, Captain Atom, and the Reach ambassador have some uncomfortable political discussions as Black Canary debriefs the Team and the Reach’s captives.I wasn’t too wild about the A-plot. Mindless carnage and slugfests aren’t my thing. I didn’t like it in the final episode of “Justice League Unlimited,” “Destroyer”; I have no interest in the WWE; and Shonen anime like “Dragonball Z” doesn’t do it for me at all. But, if you like this sort of thing, this episode is definitely for you because it is well boarded, well animated, and well done. It just wasn’t my thing. There were some great moments though, like Miss Martian refusing to attack Despero’s mind after what she did to Kaldur’s, and any excuse to see Zatanna in her new, cleavage-revealing costume is okay in my book. Maybe Despero will be back, maybe not, but this seemed like build up to the destruction of the Hall of Justice so the Reach ambassador could reveal the existence of the Watchtower. And on that note…

The B-plot with the ambassador, Tseng, and Captain Atom was great. Like a great politician, the ambassador knows how to tell people what they want to hear and make himself and his position look good while doing it. Watching Captain Atom walk a tightrope was fun, and I love it when villains have heroes in a real bind. This is the sort of thing you never saw in the 80’s toy commercial cartoons, and it will make the Reach that much harder to defeat… if this were the 80’s, by the twenty-minute mark, the ambassador would have shouted “REACH, RETREAT!” and that would have been that. I am a firm believer in earning your happy ending, and alongside The Light, the Reach will make our heroes work for it. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The C-plot is Black Canary debriefing and providing therapy to the victims of the Reach, and as always, Vanessa Marshall is a pleasure to listen to. Static makes a cameo here, but the real turn is when Blue Beetle doesn’t hide what Impulse told him about the future and comes clean. Will this set the Reach Apocalypse into motion? Will this be the key to defeating the Reach? Time will tell.

I’ve missed “Young Justice” and I’m glad it’s back. Enjoy next week’s hiatus! I’m kidding, I hope.
