A Message From The World’s Finest

First off, apologies for the rather bland subject line up there. It comes off more ominous than it should. Sorry about that! Anyways…

With 2014 now done and over with, the last news story from The World’s Finest has officially been posted up. As I mentioned on this site a year ago, it’s time to ease back on the overall workload of this site, and that starts with wrapping up the daily news post for the foreseeable future. Thousands and thousands of news posts, including three straight years of news posts at least five days a week, without a single weekday missed. And, with 2015 now here, that ends as The World’s Finest will return to its roots as an unbeatable resource for fans. An archive of content, a collection of materials covering a host of different shows and movies, a wealth of information – call it what you will, but The World’s Finest will be embracing that once again.

What does that all encompass? Well, don’t get alarmed … it’s all good! As the site shifts into a content destination, certain aspects of the site will stop while an emphasis will be placed on others. Daily news posts will cease, as I said, and no new subsites will be added to the site as of this time. Does that mean the end of updates and new material? No – there will always be new content added here, but the site will now just be easier for me to manage.

Site updates will continue going forward, reviews will still be posted, more content will be added (images, behind-the-scenes material, etc.), along with the odd interview. However, now, the site updates will now fall more onto the resource side of things. As I said, there will be no new additional subsites added to The World’s Finest going forward, with the possible exception of smaller pages dedicated to installments of the ongoing DC Universe Animated Original Movie line. Assorted DVD, Blu-ray, and other media releases will also still be covered. A new Batman: The Brave and The Bold Blu-ray? We’ll cover and review it – 100%. New soundtrack release? We’re on it – count on it. The only thing really changing is the end of daily news posts (which, honestly, it didn’t seem like a lot of people noticed anyway, given how so many stories broken here went unnoticed or stolen over the years).

A lot of factors played a role in this decision. For one, this site is too unwieldy for one person to handle. I cover about 95% of the work on the site, the forums and social media outlets. This includes emails, press work, reviews, finding reviewers and content, all of that. I spend many hours a day working on this site, volunteering countless hours. Juggling that with a regular job, a family, etc., and, well, something has to give. I have more responsibilities than ever before and there are just not enough hours in the day. But I can’t just abandon the site – no way. Given how long I’ve been working on this site, from its first iteration back in 1997, and how attached I am to it, I opted not to pass the torch. I did ask for help, more than a few times, but no one came to bat. So, I opted to scale the site responsibilities down to its skeleton in order to keep it going. I am expecting to reduce my presence and update rate overtime, though. The forum duties will be passed over to someone else entirely, for example. Still, with this, I’m able to balance my workload easier, have a bit of a better life, and explore other options.

This site is not going away. It’s not going anywhere. It’s going to stay right here. There’s no way I could let it go, anyways. All the content that you see here is not budging an inch. The only thing really changing is the removal of daily news updates and an easing back on the frequency of updates. This site will always be here for you to access and explore. In fact, to this day, there are some nifty secrets still not uncovered here on the site, which tells me there’s plenty for all of you still to explore.

For those worried, this isn’t the end. All you need to do is keep an eye on the “Site Updates” section to see that. Over the next few days, you’ll see the main page here change a little. The news will be replaced with links to the major site sections here, and the daily news shuffled off into an archive (where it will be readily accessible to look through). All portions of this site, I think, will be more easily accessible for those wanting to look around and just see what we have to offer. This site is the biggest DC Comics-animation (and Batman animation) site out there to this day, and I doubt that’ll change, even with the evolving trends of internet culture. But hey, no matter how much all of that changes, The World’s Finest will always be right here.

If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to drop a line. The social media portals for The World’s Finest will remain up until I decide what to do with them. I can be easily reached there, or through the contact links scattered throughout the site here. If all that fails, just catch me on the forums.

I’d like to express a quick “thanks” to all the folks who have helped me over the years. Zach, Ian, James, Barry, Eileen, Brian, Michael and a wealth of other people I can’t thank enough. This seems like a nice moment to tip my hat to them as I follow the site through a few minor changes and lifts. For your daily news fix, which plenty of you are clearly already getting elsewhere, I suggest you keep it tuned to Toonzone and DCAU Resource. The forums right here are also a good spot for any developments or concerns, as well. I may post the odd piece up from time to time there.

And that’s all from me for now, folks. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask. Don’t hesitate. That’s what I’m here for. Thanks!

-James

Year-End 2012 Sales For “DC Universe Animated Original Movie” Animated Titles

Debuting three new feature-length titles in 2012, the DC Universe Animated Original Movie direct-to-video line from Warner Home Video moved nearly 1.1 million home video units during the calendar year. The above number comes from the three DC Universe Animated Original Movie titles that debuted this year – Justice League: Doom, Superman Versus The Elite and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part Two – and those numbers are expected to see some growth, though likely slight, during the 2012 holiday season. Note that all numbers listed in this articles are estimated numbers only, based on research and market analysis.

Among the three new DC Universe Animated Original Movie titles, the February 2012 Justice League: Doom animated feature has moved the most units since its release date, predictably so given it’s early in-the-year release date, moving an estimated 615,000 units combined in the DVD and Blu-ray formats since hitting shelves. The title benefited from strong word-of-mouth throughout the year, along with multiple award nominations and recognition for the work of the late Dwayne McDuffie, who penned the feature. The direct-to-video Justice League: Doom animated feature debuted to 265,000 home video units copies sold in its first week of sales, the week ending March 5th, 2012.

The second feature-length DC Universe Animated Original Movie title of the year, released Summer 2012, the direct-to-video Superman Versus The Elite animated feature has moved 206,000 units in both the DVD and Blu-ray format since its debut. The title was easily the lowest profile release in the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line for 2012, barely selling over 130,000 units combined in its first frame, the week ending June 17th, 2012. Criticism of the film’s design work resulted in negative word-of-mouth for the feature, something it was unable to overcome.

Lastly, the final 2012 release under the DC Universe Animated Original Movie banner, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One has proven to be a solid seller on the home video market. The title moved 210,000 total DVD and Blu-ray units in its first week, and over 260,000 to date. The majority of sales, over 70%, came from the Blu-ray format. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One is expected to finish out the year with consistent sales thanks to the home video release of the theatrical feature The Dark Knight Rises, as well as the anticipation for the January 2013 release of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part Two.

Please note the above sales numbers do not take into account rental numbers, OnDemand numbers or legal download numbers. Sales numbers are estimates gathered through independent research, market analysis and various home media retailing outlets. Additionally, sale numbers from titles released before the 2012 calendar year are not taken into account. Also remember to take into account release date and character marketability when comparing sales numbers for each title.

“DC Universe Animated Original Movie” Titles Secure Despite Warner Premiere Closure

The World’s Finest has confirmed that the future of the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line is currently safe and sound despite the just-announced shuttering of the Warner Premiere direct-to-DVD feature line from Warner Home Video. Recent reports reveal that Warner Bros. studio has shut down the direct-to-video label Warner Premiere, due to a downturn in the home video market, with any currently in-production titles and projects being wrapped up before the brand disappears.

When initial details of the Warner Premiere closure hit, multiple reports were issued stating the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line – released under the Warner Premiere banner – would also come to an end. Representatives for the studio have since confirmed that is not the case. Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video will continue to both produce and release animated films, including not just titles in the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line, but for other popular brands including Scooby-Doo, Tom and Jerry, and more.

A representative for Warner Home Video tells The World’s Finest that the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line is still in full swing and “going strong.” Upcoming confirmed titles under the acclaimed direct-to-video banner include Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part Two. Justice League: Flashpoint and an animated film based on the Action Comics story “Superman: Brainiac” are also currently in the works, though unconfirmed with titles subject to change, with even further titles in various stages of production.

To reiterate, the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line will continue for the foreseeable future, with assorted projects in various stages of completion. Essentially, the closure of Warner Premiere will not effect the line in any way. Details for the next DC Universe Animated Original Movie – Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One – can be found right here at The World’s Finest.

Coverage on past titles in the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line can be found here. Stay tuned for further updates here soon.

RoboCop star Peter Weller leads Stellar Voice Cast as Batman in Animated Blu-ray Combo Pack & DVD

High-Definition Trailer

Standard Definition Trailer

Frank Miller’s landmark graphic novel about fear, hope and redemption is celebrated with proper measures of haunting visuals and intense action in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One, the next entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies. Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, the all-new, PG-13 rated film arrives September 25, 2012 from Warner Home Video as a Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD, On Demand and for Download. The Blu-ray™ Combo Pack will include UltraViolet™.

The DC Universe Animated Original Movies have been a fan favorite since debuting in 2007 with Superman Doomsday. Now averaging three releases each year, the DCU animated films are based on classic tales from DC Comics’ revered library or original stories featuring DC’s fabled characters. Stars of feature film and primetime television populate the stellar voice casts of the DCU animated films. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One represents the 15th film in the ongoing series.

Fanboy demi-god Peter Weller (RoboCop) leads a stellar voice cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Joining Weller behind the microphone is David Selby (The Social Network, Dark Shadows) as Commissioner Gordon, Ariel Winter (Modern Family) as Carrie/Robin, three-time DCU veteran Wade Williams (Prison Break) as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, and Michael McKean (This is Spinal Tap) as Dr. Bartholomew Wolper.

In the bleak and ominous future of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One, it’s been a decade since Bruce Wayne hung up his cape, following most of the other superheroes who had been forced into retirement. Facing the downside of middle age, a restless Bruce Wayne pacifies his frustration with racecars and liquor – but the Bat still beckons as he watches his city fall prey to gangs of barbaric criminals known as The Mutants.

The return of Harvey Dent as Two-Face finally prompts Wayne to once again don the Dark Knight’s cowl, and his dramatic capture of the villain returns him to crime-fighting – simultaneously making him the target of law enforcement and the new hope for a desolate Gotham City. Particularly inspired is a teenage girl named Carrie, who adopts the persona of Robin and ultimately saves Batman from a brutal attack by the Mutant leader. Armed with a new sidekick, and re-energized with a definitive purpose, the Dark Knight returns to protect Gotham from foes new … and old.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One is directed by Jay Oliva (Man of Steel, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights) from a screenplay by Bob Goodman (Warehouse 13). Sam Register (Young Justice, Teen Titans, Ben 10) and Bruce Timm (Justice League: Doom) are the executive producers. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part Two will provide the epic story’s thrilling conclusion with its release in early 2013.

“Frank Miller’s classic re-imagining of Batman has been faithfully recreated under Bruce Timm’s skilled guidance as a masterpiece of storytelling,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Home Video Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing and Partner Brands. “This story has been treated with great reverence, including a tour-de-force performance by science fiction legend Peter Weller as the voice of Batman. We know our fans will not only love this film as a stand-alone, but will clamor for the release of the second half next year.”

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One Blu-ray™ Combo Pack has more than 2 hours of exciting content, including:
• Standard and high definition versions of the feature film
• UltraViolet™*
• Sneak Peak at Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2, the next DC Universe Animated Original Movie
• Featurette – “Her Name is Carrie … Her Role is Robin” – An all-new featurette. Experience the role of Robin, through the eyes of a female warrior.

The above content is also available at the The World’s Finest Superman Versus The Elite subsite.

In further Superman Versus The Elite news, Warner Home Entertainment and The World’s Finest has teamed up to giveaway five Blu-ray editions of the highly-anticipated Superman Versus The Elite direct-to-video animated feature, available everywhere June 12th, 2012. Only the winners will be contacted upon closure of the contest and recipients selected, which will happen by June 15th, 2012. Please note this contest is open to Canadian and United States residents only.

Superman vs. The Elite, a DC Comics Premiere Movie, is produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video. The all-new, PG-13 rated film is scripted by award-winning comics writer Joe Kelly and the story is adapted from his original 2001 DC Comics release, Whats So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way? The single-issue comic, Action Comics #775, was lauded by Wizard Magazine as the Greatest Superman Story of All Time, and ranked the epic tale at No. 21 on its list of the Top 100 Comics of the last 30 years.

In Superman vs. The Elite, Superman’s effectiveness as a super hero comes into question when a new group of super powerful crusaders, known as “The Elite,” appear on the scene. As super heroes, the Elite know no bounds, and are more than willing to kill, even on a massive scale, to stop villainy — putting them on a collision course with the ever-ethical, yet preferably non-lethal Man of Steel.

George Newbern (Father of the Bride) reprises his Justice League animated television role as Superman, and primetime television star Pauley Perrette (NCIS) provides the voice of Lois Lane. Downes steps in as Manchester Black, leader of The Elite. David Kaufman (Justice League: Doom) also reprises his Justice League TV series role as Jimmy Olsen.

The film is directed by Michael Chang (Batman: Brave and the Bold). Bruce Timm (Batman: Year One) is executive producer, and Alan Burnett (Green Lantern: Emerald Knights) is producer.

A co-production of Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video, the direct-to-video Superman Versus The Elite animated feature debuts Tuesday, June 12th, 2012 on Blu-ray, DVD, OnDemand and for Download from Warner Home Video.

Beginning with the June 2012 Superman Versus The Elite animated feature, upcoming installments of the popular movie line will now fall under the name DC Comics Premiere Movie. Additionally, all titles under the line will feature the new DC Comics logo in the lower left-hand corner, similar to any home video titles featuring DC Comics characters. Warner Home Video recently released the following banner image promoting the upcoming Superman Versus The Elite animated feature, the new DC Comics Premiere Movie trade dress included.

The recent rebranding is part of the companys mission to fully realize the value of its portfolio of brands, stories and characters, distinguished by incredible breadth and depth across publishing, media and merchandise. The new branding started appearing on comic books and graphic novels as of March 2012, the same time as the launch of the DC Nation programming block on Cartoon Network, and is starting to touch upon different consumer products. The new branding will be rolled out over time on other DC Entertainment products from Warner Bros. – including film, television, interactive games and merchandise – with complete saturation before the end of 2012.

The DC Universe Animated Original Movie line was launched in 2007 with Superman/Doomsday, and has since seen a wide selection of home video and soundtrack releases under the banner. New Updates On “Green Lantern: The Animated Series, ” Young Justice,” Other Projects

New updates on Young Justice, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line and the DC Nation programming block were announced over the weekend at the WonderCon 2012. WonderCon is one of the country’s top comics and pop culture conventions, and was held at Anaheim, California and the Anaheim Convention Center for the weekend of March 16 – 18, 2012. Friday night saw a special airing of the upcoming Superman Versus The Elite animated feature and special Q & A, while Saturday brought about DC Nation panel focusing on the DC Nation shorts and Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series.

During the Friday night screening of the DC Universe Animated Original Movie title Superman Versus The Elite at WonderCon, more details on the home video release are available here, 78 seconds from The Dark Knight Returns, Part One was shown after the main feature. The footage provided clean looks at many of the main characters, including Batman, Robin and the Mutant Leader. The footage was screened exclusively for the convention, but expect a trailer for The Dark Knight Returns, Part One, the Fall 2012 installment of the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line, to be released by summer 2012.

Continuing, new updates for Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series – the current cartoon titles airing on the DC Nation Saturday morning block on Cartoon Network – were revealed during the DC Nation panel discussion held on Saturday at WonderCon. The panel was attended by Young Justice producer Brandon Vietti, Young Justice producer/story editor Greg Weisman, Green Lantern: The Animated Series producer/story editor Jim Krieg, Green Lantern: The Animated Series producer Giancarlo Volpe, and DC Nation shorts producers Ben Jones and Lauren Faust.

During the panel, Jones announced that the current season of DC Nation shorts are currently underway. Upcoming shorts for this season include more Super Best Friends Forever, DC Worlds Funnest, Black Lightning, Superman of Tokyo, Amethyst, The Atom, Vibe, Doom Patrol and more. Ideas are currently being pitched for an upcoming wave of cartoons, with a second season of DC Nation shorts currently in the works.

A preview of upcoming Green Lantern: The Animated Series episodes was shown during the WonderCon panel. Clips from the preview included Skallox fighting Kilowog, Carol Ferris returning as a delirious Star Sapphire, Razer meeting Saint Walker, and Hal Jordan facing off against the Thanagarians. Krieg and Volpe also hinted that Sinestro is coming to Green Lantern: The Animated Series at some point, and that other human Green Lanterns may be appearing in the future.

Volpe also mentioned he has a plan to adapt the acclaimed “Blackest Night” DC Comics story-line, but it depends on if the show is a hit and he and his production crew have the chance to do more episodes.

A sizzle reel for Young Justice was shown during the panel, providing an overview of the first season and preview of season two – Young Justice: Invasion. The reel included clips of Blue Beetle, Lobo, Clayface, the Flying Graysons, Superboy in his new costume, and Lagoon Boy. Concerning the second season, Vietti says Young Justice: Invasion is a “big, long story” of aliens invading Earth. Nine different alien races from the DC Universe will pop up during the season, plus a visit to Rann. Vietti added that Blue Beetle will play a big role in the second season, and Lagoon Boy will appear, but the size of their roles is being kept under wraps. Jay Garrick will have a much larger role in the second season, Weisman states. 62 new characters will appear in the second season. Weisman called the second season a “20-chapter novel.” The second season of Young Justice is slated to start in April 2012, according to participants of the panel, though the network did not confirm any given dates.

WORLD SAVED, HUMANITY LOST
GET READY FOR THE NEXT
ALL-NEW DC UNIVERSE ANIMATED ORIGINAL MOVIE
SUPERMAN VS. THE ELITE
COMING JUNE 12, 2012 FROM WARNER HOME VIDEO

NCIS star Pauley Perrette teams with Justice League alum George Newbern
in animated Blu-rayTM Combo Pack & DVD version of Joe Kellys heralded Whats So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?

The Man Of Steel comes face-to-face with powerful villains, daunting rivals and a society more interested in retribution than justice when a new, less-ethical breed of super hero arrives in Metropolis in Superman Versus The Elite, the next entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies. Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, the all-new, PG-13 rated film arrives June 12, 2012 from Warner Home Video as a Blu-ray Combo Pack ($24.98 SRP) and DVD ($19.98 SRP), On Demand and for Download. Both the Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD will include an UltraViolet Digital Copy.

Award-winning comics writer Joe Kelly has crafted a taut, thrilling screenplay, adapted from the original 2001 DC Comics release, Whats So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?, by Kelly and Doug Mahnke with Lee Bermejo. The single-issue comic, Action Comics #775, was lauded by Wizard Magazine as the Greatest Superman Story of All Time, and ranked the epic tale at No. 21 on its list of the Top 100 Comics of the last 30 years.

In the film, Superman’s effectiveness as a super hero comes into question when a new group of super powerful crusaders, known as “The Elite,” appear on the scene. As super heroes, the Elite know no bounds, and are more than willing to kill, even on a massive scale,to stop villainy — putting them on a collision course with the ever-ethical and decidedly non-lethal Man of Steel.

George Newbern (Father of the Bride) reprises his Justice League animated role as Superman, and primetime television star Pauley Perrette (NCIS) provides the voice of Lois Lane. Versatile voice actor Robin Atkin Downes (Babylon 5, Justice League: Doom) steps in as Manchester Black, leader of The Elite. David Kaufman (Justice League: Doom) also reprises his Justice League TV series role as Jimmy Olsen.

The film is directed by Michael Chang (Batman: The Brave and the Bold). Sam Register (Young Justice, Teen Titans, Ben 10) and Bruce Timm (Batman: Year One) are the executive producers. Alan Burnett is producer.

Superman Versus The Elite adds to the rich legacy of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series, spotlighting an important chapter in the annals of Man of Steel stories, said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Home Video Vice President, Family & Animation and Partner Brands Marketing. Bringing back George Newbern gives the film a nice touch of nostalgia for fans of the Justice League animated series, and Pauley Perrette gives Lois Lane altogether new dimensions with her performance.

Superman Versus The Elite Blu-ray Combo Pack has 3 hours of exciting content, including:
-Standard and high definition versions of the feature film
-UltraViolet Digital Copy*
-Sneak Peak at Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, the next DC Universe Animated Original Movie
-Featurette The Elite Unbound: No Rules, No Mercy A short documentary focused upon The Elite, and their arc of character throughout the comics. Even the anti-heroes have their own struggles and triumphs. Its all highlighted in this compelling film that begins with the inspiration of The Authority, and how The Elite became the answer to that book, and a fresh approach for DC Comics in the post 9/11 world. It was an unexpected twist to the pages of Action Comics, and this documentary summarizes the true potency of these Elite.
-Featurette Superman and the Moral Debate Theres a prevailing thought about ending terrorism and ridding our Earth of the maladjusted once and for all by fighting fire with fire! This is the story of The Elite, a band of fringe Superheroes who were compelled to eradicate the Earth of its scum, its tyranny and evil once and for all, not with words, but with raw unadulterated action, designed to kill their opponents. This is their controversial story.
Creative team audio commentary
-Two bonus episodes from Superman: The Animated Series handpicked by producer Alan Burnett: Brave New Metropolis and Warrior Queen.
