A Message From The World’s Finest

First off, apologies for the rather bland subject line up there. It comes off more ominous than it should. Sorry about that! Anyways…

With 2014 now done and over with, the last news story from The World’s Finest has officially been posted up. As I mentioned on this site a year ago, it’s time to ease back on the overall workload of this site, and that starts with wrapping up the daily news post for the foreseeable future. Thousands and thousands of news posts, including three straight years of news posts at least five days a week, without a single weekday missed. And, with 2015 now here, that ends as The World’s Finest will return to its roots as an unbeatable resource for fans. An archive of content, a collection of materials covering a host of different shows and movies, a wealth of information – call it what you will, but The World’s Finest will be embracing that once again.

What does that all encompass? Well, don’t get alarmed … it’s all good! As the site shifts into a content destination, certain aspects of the site will stop while an emphasis will be placed on others. Daily news posts will cease, as I said, and no new subsites will be added to the site as of this time. Does that mean the end of updates and new material? No – there will always be new content added here, but the site will now just be easier for me to manage.

Site updates will continue going forward, reviews will still be posted, more content will be added (images, behind-the-scenes material, etc.), along with the odd interview. However, now, the site updates will now fall more onto the resource side of things. As I said, there will be no new additional subsites added to The World’s Finest going forward, with the possible exception of smaller pages dedicated to installments of the ongoing DC Universe Animated Original Movie line. Assorted DVD, Blu-ray, and other media releases will also still be covered. A new Batman: The Brave and The Bold Blu-ray? We’ll cover and review it – 100%. New soundtrack release? We’re on it – count on it. The only thing really changing is the end of daily news posts (which, honestly, it didn’t seem like a lot of people noticed anyway, given how so many stories broken here went unnoticed or stolen over the years).

A lot of factors played a role in this decision. For one, this site is too unwieldy for one person to handle. I cover about 95% of the work on the site, the forums and social media outlets. This includes emails, press work, reviews, finding reviewers and content, all of that. I spend many hours a day working on this site, volunteering countless hours. Juggling that with a regular job, a family, etc., and, well, something has to give. I have more responsibilities than ever before and there are just not enough hours in the day. But I can’t just abandon the site – no way. Given how long I’ve been working on this site, from its first iteration back in 1997, and how attached I am to it, I opted not to pass the torch. I did ask for help, more than a few times, but no one came to bat. So, I opted to scale the site responsibilities down to its skeleton in order to keep it going. I am expecting to reduce my presence and update rate overtime, though. The forum duties will be passed over to someone else entirely, for example. Still, with this, I’m able to balance my workload easier, have a bit of a better life, and explore other options.

This site is not going away. It’s not going anywhere. It’s going to stay right here. There’s no way I could let it go, anyways. All the content that you see here is not budging an inch. The only thing really changing is the removal of daily news updates and an easing back on the frequency of updates. This site will always be here for you to access and explore. In fact, to this day, there are some nifty secrets still not uncovered here on the site, which tells me there’s plenty for all of you still to explore.

For those worried, this isn’t the end. All you need to do is keep an eye on the “Site Updates” section to see that. Over the next few days, you’ll see the main page here change a little. The news will be replaced with links to the major site sections here, and the daily news shuffled off into an archive (where it will be readily accessible to look through). All portions of this site, I think, will be more easily accessible for those wanting to look around and just see what we have to offer. This site is the biggest DC Comics-animation (and Batman animation) site out there to this day, and I doubt that’ll change, even with the evolving trends of internet culture. But hey, no matter how much all of that changes, The World’s Finest will always be right here.

If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to drop a line. The social media portals for The World’s Finest will remain up until I decide what to do with them. I can be easily reached there, or through the contact links scattered throughout the site here. If all that fails, just catch me on the forums.

I’d like to express a quick “thanks” to all the folks who have helped me over the years. Zach, Ian, James, Barry, Eileen, Brian, Michael and a wealth of other people I can’t thank enough. This seems like a nice moment to tip my hat to them as I follow the site through a few minor changes and lifts. For your daily news fix, which plenty of you are clearly already getting elsewhere, I suggest you keep it tuned to Toonzone and DCAU Resource. The forums right here are also a good spot for any developments or concerns, as well. I may post the odd piece up from time to time there.

And that’s all from me for now, folks. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask. Don’t hesitate. That’s what I’m here for. Thanks!

-James

“Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” Home Video Release Crosses 400,000 Moved

Released in September 2009, the direct-to-video Superman/Batman: Public Enemies animated feature remains a steady seller for Warner Home Video, still managing to average an estimated 5,000 – 10,000 DVD units sold a week despite hitting shelves over six month ago. The title crossed the 400,000 DVD units sold mark in February 2010, making it one of the highest selling titles under the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line to date.

Though unconfirmed at this time, a sequel to the Superman/Batman: Public Enemies direct-to-video animated feature is reportedly in production. Its impressive initial week sales and continued performance on the home video market is the purported reason for Warner Home Video to move ahead with a second Superman/Batman direct-to-video animated installment. As is standard practice, Warner Home Video will not comment on any animated feature that has not been announced as in production.

Additionally, The Worlds Finest is currently unable to receive confirmation from Warner Home Video or Warner Bros. Animation concerning a new Green Lantern direct-to-video animated feature. Reportedly set for release next summer, to tie in with the live-action Green Lantern 2011 theatrical release, the DC Universe Original Animated Original Movie title will apparently focus on different members of the Green Lantern Corps. A new Green Lantern animated series is also rumored to be in production for Cartoon Network, with an initial episode order of 26 episodes, but also remains unconfirmed by Warner Bros. Animation at this time.

Green Lantern: First Flight, the first Green Lantern direct-to-video animated feature released by Warner Home Video under the DC Universe Animated Original Movie banner, has sold an estimated 306,000 DVD copies to date since hitting shelves in July 2009.

Year-End 2009 Sales For “DC Universe Animated Original Movie” Animated Feature Titles

Debuting three new titles this year, the DC Universe Animated Original Movie direct-to-video animated feature line from Warner Home Video moved nearly one million DVD units in 2009. Over 900,000 of those units came from the three new DC Universe Animated Original Movie titles that debuted this year – Wonder Woman, Green Lantern: First Flight and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies – and those numbers are expected to grow during the December 2009 holiday season.

Among the three new DC Universe Animated Original Movie titles, the September 2009 Superman/Batman: Public Enemies animated feature made the biggest splash of this years releases, moving an estimated 342,000 DVD units since hitting shelves. Home video retail outlets are expecting the title to finish with at least a total 350,000 of units sold by the end of 2009. The direct-to-video Superman/Batman: Public Enemies animated feature debuted to an estimated 198,000 DVD copies sold in its first week of sales, during the week ending October 4th, 2009.

The second DC Universe Animated Original Movie title released this year, released during the summer sales season, the direct-to-video Green Lantern: First Flight animated feature has sold an estimated 286,000 copies since its mid-year debut. The direct-to-video Green Lantern: First Flight animated feature debuted to an estimated 160,000 DVD copies sold in its first week of sales, during the week ending August 2nd, 2009. The Annie Award nominated feature is expected to finish 2009 with at least a total of 295,000 DVD units moved according to home video retail outlets.

Lastly, the first 2009 release under the DC Universe Animated Original Movie banner, Wonder Woman has moved an estimated 292,000 DVD copies since premiering during the first quarter of the year. The release has boasted consistently stable sales throughout the year despite having the lowest debut week of all the DC Universe Animated Original Movie titles to date. Wonder Woman debuted with 107,000 in DVD sales in its first week, the week ending March 8th, 2009, though sales quickly leveled off after the standard second week plunge. The critically-acclaimed direct-to-video animated feature is also expected to finish out 2009 with a projected estimate of 295,000 DVDs unit sold according to home video retail outlets.

Please note the above sales numbers do not take into account rental numbers, OnDemand numbers, legal download numbers, or high-definition release sales.

Additionally, though not under the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line, Warner Home Video and Warner Premiere also debuted the direct-to-video animated tie-in feature Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter, tying into the live-action Watchmen Spring 2009 theatrical release. While the home video premiere title stumbled out of the gate with 42,000 in DVD sales for its first week, the week of March 29th, 2009, the title has since moved an estimated 198,000 copies since its debut, and will likely top out with a respectable 200,000 DVD units moved by the end of 2009.

A co-production of Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation, the DC Universe Animated Original Movie line is expected to release between two three new direct-to-video animated features in 2010, with the next title, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, set to debut February 23rd, 2010 on DVD and Blu-ray disc. Two additional direct-to-video animated features are set to follow later in the year.

Loeb Discusses Recent “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” Animated Feature Release

The World’s Finest caught up with famed comic and television writer Jeph Loeb for a quick Q & A to share his thoughts on the recent direct-to-video Superman/Batman: Public Enemies animated feature released under the DC Universe Animated Original Movie banner by Warner Home Video. The Superman/Batman: Public Enemies animated feature arrived on home video in September 2009. The animated feature adapted the six-issue story arc of the same name, originally written by Loeb, from the Superman/Batman comic series currently published by DC Comics. The story features Superman and Batman facing off against Lex Luthor, now President of the United States.

The Worlds Finest: First up, what are your thoughts on the finished product?

Jeph Loeb: I thought it was great. Any time we can get our stories out there beyond comics is awesome.

WF: What did you think of the changes made, such as the new explanation for the bounty on Superman’s head, or the altered ending (I.E., no more “There will be a crisis..”), etc? Any alterations you disagree with?

JL: I think it helps that I work in television and film already. I understand the challenges of making a story accessible to an audience that isn’t reading comics. Things like “There will be a crisis” is super cool for the comic book reader, but how would that translate to everyone else. So it was all good.

WF: What about the art-style? Did you find it faithful, and that it translated the visuals successfully?

JL: Its always a challenge to take something that is 2-D and animate it. Both Ed [McGuinness] and I were thrilled with the end vision.

WF: Based on the impressive debut for the title, Warner Home Video has greenlit a second Superman/Batman movie. Which other story Superman/Batman story that you penned would you like to see adapted. Why?

JL: I hear rumors that they are doing Superman/Batman: Supergirl which introduces Supergirl to the DCU. It has a great cast, including Wonder Woman and and the villain Darkseid, and as written, a true origin story for Supergirl. All that and Michael Turner’s astonishing artwork. Go for it!

WF: Do you have any last thoughts on the title? Good? Bad? Do you hope you’ll see more of your work animated?

JL: I’d love to see more of it and if I have the time, be able to do the adaptation myself!

WF: To wrap up, what projects do you have on your plate right now?

JL: I’m about to begin this giant epic adventure over in Hulk revealing all the secrets of the Red Hulk starting in January. In February, a new project called Ultimate X with beautiful illustrations by Arthur Adams. And in March, I’ve got New Ultimates coming out with extraordinary artwork by Frank Cho. I’m very proud of what’s to come in 2010!

The World’s Finest would like to thank Jeph Loeb for his participation!

A co-production of Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies is now available to own on DVD and Blu-ray disc. The next title under the DC Universe Animated Original Movie banner, the direct-to-video Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths animated feature, debuts February 23rd, 2010 on DVD and Blu-ray disc.

“Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” Writer Berkowitz On Animation Writing Award Honor

Announced last month, Emmy-winning writer Stan Berkowitz received the West Animation Writers Caucus twelfth annual Animation Writing Award from the Writers Guild of America, recognizing his prolific career and creative contributions to the craft of film and television animation writing, as well as his efforts to organize animation on behalf of the Writers Guild. The press release is available to view here. The Worlds Finest caught up for a quick chat with Berkowitz concerning this prestigious lifetime achievement award.

The Worlds Finest: So, what are your overall thoughts on receiving this award. How did you find out and what kind of reaction have you received, from yourself and your co-workers and colleagues.

Stan Berkowitz: Im glad the Writers Guild still believes in organizing animation, even after failing to get it covered during their last negotiation with management. Theyre continuing to help writers get pensions, health insurance and credit arbitration. I found out about the award from a phone message from Linda Woolverton, last years winner, and the reaction has been very positive from just about everyone.

WF: How does it feel to be acknowledged for your career and contributions to the industry? And does winning this award any type of weight to your upcoming projects?

SB: Its a nice feeling to get an award like this, but Im not sure if it will lend any weight to my future aspirations. Only time will tell.

WF: Are there any specific projects or events you are particularly proud of during your ongoing career?

SB: Lots of individual scripts, too numerous to mention. Also, Im very pleased that I was able to help some writers get union benefits.

WF: What can we expect from you in the future? Any hints?

SB: Coming up is a new series called The 99. You can go to the99.org and see a preview as well as a copy of the comic book upon which the series is based. The producers are currently in negotiations for an American cable outlet. Check it out.

The WGAWs AWC Animation Writing Award is given to members of the Animation Writers Caucus or Writers Guild who have advanced the literature of animation in film and/or television through the years and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the animation writer. Recent AWC Writing Award honorees include Brad Bird, Al Jean, Jules Feiffer, Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Michael Reiss, and the AWCs 2008 recipient, Linda Woolverton.
